The evolution of organized crime in Venezuela has reached extreme levels. The country is now a hybrid state, where the line between governance and criminality is barely perceptible.
President Nicolás Maduro has promised a presidential election in 2024. Ahead of the elections, we can expect a dramatic increase in cooperation between criminal networks and the state elements they support, working hand-in-hand to ensure the vote is anything but free and fair.
InSight Crime invites you to participate in the launch of the Spanish-language version of the Venezuelan Organized Crime Observatory (already available in English). We will be hosting a virtual panel of experts who will discuss the criminal scenarios and challenges facing the country in the year ahead.
Panelists:
- Jeremy McDermott – Co-director of InSight Crime
- Ligia Bolívar – General coordinator of Alerta Venezuela
- Angélica Durán-Martínez– Professor at the University of Massachusetts
- Roberto Briceño León – Sociologist and director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence (Observatorio Venezolano de la Violencia – OVV)
Moderator:
- Javier I. Mayorca – Journalist and editor at Crímenes Sin Castigo
